Val di Cornia

The Val di Cornia is the extreme southern tip of the province of Livorno, on the territory of Maremma Piombinese, it covers the area straddling the Maremma Livornese (historically Pisan Maremma) and Grosseto near the mouth of the river.
The territory is mostly hilly hinterland where it creeps towards the south-western offshoots of the Metalliferous Hills and enters the southern part of the province of Pisa licking up the Val di Cecina, is rather flat along the coast, except for the cape Piombino, which separates the cities of the same name (which is the capital and seat of the district) from the Gulf of Baratti, on whose summit stands the medieval village of North Populonia which was developed at the pre-existing Etruscan town with its necropolis.

The area includes the area along the coastal town of Piombino and San Vincenzo, while inland the municipalities of Campiglia Marittima, Suvereto, Sassetta Maritime Monteverdi. The area is characterized by Etruscan archaeological sites, among which are those of the Gulf of Baratti and Populonia, and the historical towns of the Middle Ages. Remarkable is also the richness of the soil, for the numerous mines exploited since the time of the Etruscans.
Well-known national and international level are the wines of the Val di Cornia DOC Val di Cornia.
The production area of d.o.c. Val di Cornia is a large area that includes the towns of Suvereto, Piombino and Campiglia Marittima, St. Vincent and Sassetta in the province of Livorno and the municipality of Monteverdi in the province of Pisa. The wines produced in the territories of the municipality of Suvereto are entitled to the designation of sub-zone "Suvereto".
